Train Your Site, Responsive Redesign for Norfolk Southern
Art Direction Web Design Responsive Design Front-end Development
Norfolk Southern has had a program called Train Your Brain, or Brainy's World, for the past few years in an effort to increase awareness and education about train safety. They focus on lot on educating communities about train statistics, how to safely cross railroads, not to play around them, and so on. They make appearances at different events and schools around the country with their mascot, Brainy. They formerly had a flash website featuring Brainy, promoting this awareness program. The problem was that the site was beginning to look dated, and being completely flash-based, did not work on mobile at all - which is very important in today's age of mobile tech.
I was on the team at Archer>Malmo working on a complete refresh of the whole campaign - from print to web. Through a bit of research they decided to change the title from Brainy's World to Train Your Brain and focus more on Train Safety and less on the Mascot. I was given the interactive side and tasked with redesigning the whole website, and make sure everything was responsive. I kept everything in the site consistent with the direction the team was taking overall with the look and feel of the campaign. I used a lot of the bright, vibrant, warning colors from the new color palate. We also worked in a lot of the new train and brain illustrations throughout the site. The new site was a great refresh, much more usable across devices from desktop to mobile, and the content is much easier to find than it was in the flash site.
